13-DSC_2232-Edit.jpgI met Norma at the Remembrance Day service in New Brighton. She was there to pay her respects to members of her family who died during WWI and WWII.

Her brother, William Hoyland, died in 1940 and was a member of the RAF. Her husband's uncle, John Taker, died in France and James Taker died in Gallipoli in 1917.

She remembers the bombings in Wallasey during WWII. A bomb exploded quite near her house and she was evacuated to live with her aunt in Bambry.

DSC-6894.jpgSteve Hughes, RNLI volunteer.

Steve is a cameraman by day working on TV shows. Quite a bit different to donning waterproof gear and saving lives. He's been a volunteer for 2 years now and has an interest in sailing which got him into becoming a volunteer. He's a crewmember on the lifeboat at New Brighton doing navigation and 4th man duties.

DSC_1046.jpgSince the age of 18 Paul has been fishing. He is now 54 and enjoys fishing off Anglesey, Llandudno and here in New Brighton. I always thought that they put any fish they caught back into the Mersey, that the act of fishing was enough but apparently not. If they catch a decent sized fish they'll take it home for tea, otherwise they throw the little ones back in. The conditions today were stormy with waves crashing against promenade, perfect conditions Paul said. But the best time to fish is at night, strange as it may seem. The bigger fish are easier to catch at night. While high tide helps, they do fish in low water behind Fort Perch Rock. However their recent trip there resulted in horrendous sandstorms. "Extreme fishing" he called it. 20 years ago he would return from a trip with 3 or 4 decent sized fish, but now with commercial trawlers fishing off the bar it just isn't possible.
